Two files in this story. The original, in Downloads or gallery or Documents. The working copy, in the tab memory.
Working copy is gone when the tab dies. Original is still there.
If you already hit download, a third file exists, the result, also in Downloads. That one stays too, unless you never pressed download.
Tab memory versus the folder on disk
I explain it like the xerox machine. You put the marksheet on the glass. That is the original. The machine makes a copy. If you walk away before collecting the copy, the copy may be lost in the tray story. The marksheet in your bag is still yours.
Our tab is a bad xerox that does not keep a tray on a server. Your file is not uploaded to our server. No tray in Jaipur.
So, closed the tab, is the file gone. The made-in-tab file, yes, if you did not download. The thing you dropped, no.
People mix gallery delete with tab close. Closing Chrome does not delete gallery.
I checked File Size Checker on a 4 mb photo, closed the tab, photo still 4 mb in gallery. Checker never kept it.
Same for merge. Originals stay. Merged file only if you downloaded.
Phone Files app, look. Sort by date. Today.
iPhone Files, Downloads, or the share location.
Windows, Downloads, or the folder you chose.
If you saved to a pendrive, look there, not in Chrome.
Chrome download shelf, that arrow icon, if you closed the browser the shelf is gone but the file on disk can remain.

Intern deleted Downloads to free space, then asked us to restore. We cannot. Privacy is the reason. Your file is not uploaded to our server.

This is why I download, then copy to a folder named office-2026, then I allow myself to close the tab.
If the tab froze and Windows asked wait or close, I wait once. If I close, I merge again.
20 MB files freeze more. Laptop.
Password files fail before there is a result. Nothing to lose in the tab. Original locked file still on disk.
Phone back button versus the x
Android back can close the tool page. Same as x for our purpose. Working copy gone.
Do not blame the site for a back swipe.
iPhone swipe away Chrome, same.
If Chrome crashed in the background because you opened a game, same.
I now download before I answer a call. Old habit after I lost a 8 page merge that took time to order with Up Down. Order I had to redo. Originals were fine. Time was not.
Write the order on paper if it is a big bundle. Cover, 10th, 12th, id. Then even a crash is just a re-drop.
Merge PDF does not remember the list.
JPG to PDF neither.
Word counter text in the box, gone on close. That one hurts if you typed a letter only in our box. Type in Word or Notepad, paste here to count, keep the real file elsewhere.

I tell students, FileOnDesk is not Google Docs.
If you need the result tomorrow, Downloads plus a copy on email to yourself as document, or a pendrive. Emailing is you uploading to mail, not to us.
Office wants a copy on the shared PC. Put it there after download. Closing your laptop lid later will not delete that shared copy.
Recycle bin on Windows, if you deleted the result, maybe restore from bin. That is Windows, not FileOnDesk.

What I do after a panic close
Open Downloads. Search pdf, sort newest. Open it. Flip pages.
If nothing new, redo the tool. Drop originals. Download. Then close.
If originals missing, that is a different disaster. Gallery offload, someone cleaned the phone, WhatsApp media auto delete. Not our tab.
Check Google Photos if the jpg was backed up. That is Google, not us.
Check the xerox shop WhatsApp if they sent the scan.
The tab never was the backup.

Sir asked me to write this after he closed Chrome on the front desk PC and thought the licence pdf vanished. It was in Downloads under a ugly name. We renamed. He calmed down.
Name the download immediately. shop-licence.pdf. Then close.
If two people use the same PC, Downloads is a messy drawer. Your file might be under someone else download time. Look by time, not by hope.
Incognito download still usually lands on disk. Closing incognito does not always delete Downloads. Depends. Check. Do not assume gone, do not assume private. Cafe PC is still a cafe PC.

File Size Checker after you find the file, to see if it is the 80 kb one or the 8 mb one, so you upload the right twin.

That is the closed tab story. Not gone, most days. Just hiding in a folder, or never downloaded so you must make it again.
Friday I closed the tab to look at a railway PNR. Came back, empty tool. The merge I had lined up with Up Down was gone. The three source pdfs were still in Documents. I dropped them in the same order from my paper note. Two minutes. Download this time, then I closed.
If Windows Update restarts the PC, same as close. If the office boy logs you off, same. Log off does not upload your pdf to FileOnDesk. There is nothing there.
People ask, can I recover from history. Browser history is page urls, not your marksheet. Do not hunt in history for a pdf that never left the ram.
Phone storage cleaner apps, that is a real delete risk. They wipe Downloads. Then the result is gone and it was not the tab. I tell people, if a cleaner ran, look in the cleaner trash if it has one.
