Kota, October, a student in a denim jacket. He needed a passport size photo for some form. He did not want to go to the studio near the coaching because of a test. He had a selfie. Cropped on the phone. Head a bit to the side. He asked me to make it “passport size”.
I asked him what the form said. He said passport size. I said in pixels. He did not know. We opened the form. It said something like 413 x 531 or 200 x 230 or 3.5 x 4.5 cm. I do not remember his exact line. We typed the px the form showed into Passport Photo Resize. We did not guess a PSK number from memory.
This is the rule I follow. We do not claim official PSK size as law. Passport Seva and every college portal write their own numbers. WhatsApp forwards mix them. If you type the wrong pair, the site rejects, or worse, accepts and a human rejects later.
I only had a selfie crop too, the first time I did this for myself in Jaipur. Studio is better for a real passport appointment. For a coaching form, a careful crop plus the px from that form is what people actually do.
I only have a selfie crop
Studio photos have a light, a straight head, a plain background. Selfie has a bathroom tile, a tilted phone, a smile that is trying too hard. I still work with it if the form is not a strict embassy thing.
Crop first on the phone. Head in the middle. Some space above the hair. Both ears if the form likes that. No other person in the frame. No poster of a cricket player behind. Kota hostel walls are busy. Find a plain curtain.
Then we resize to the numbers. Crop does not set 413 px. Crop just chooses the face. Resize sets the px.
If the selfie is a rectangle and the form wants a square, Image to Square pads white. Then type the side. If the form wants a taller rectangle, do not pad to square. Use passport resize with width and height.
Your file is not uploaded to our server. Face stays in the tab. For a student photo that is enough privacy for me.
20 MB. Selfie is not 20 mb usually. If it is, compress a little, then crop, then resize.
He asked if this is legal for a real passport. I said go to a studio and follow the official instructions on the government site. We do not claim official PSK size as law. This tool is for typing the px your form asked. Different job.

Type the px from that form
Open the form. Find photo size. Write it on paper. Width first, height second. Do not swap. I swapped once. Photo looked like a film poster. Rejected.
Passport Photo Resize. Type those two numbers. Drop the cropped selfie. Download. Check properties. Width and height should match what you typed, or as close as the tool gives. If the photo had to stretch, we did not want stretch. The tool should fit your crop into that box. If your crop is a different ratio, you get padding or you must crop again to match the ratio.
Ratio. 200 x 200 is square. 200 x 230 is a bit tall. A very wide selfie will get big white bars or a bad fit. Crop taller. Then resize.
I do not use cm in the browser tool. I use px. If the form only gave cm, the form often also gave px. If it gave only cm and a dpi, that is studio language. For a web form, hunt for px or kb. If they only said 3.5 x 4.5 cm for a print, a studio is the honest path. For an upload box, they almost always also wrote kb and px somewhere in a pdf instruction.
Read the instruction pdf. Students skip it. The numbers hide there.
After resize, File Size Checker. If they want 20 kb to 50 kb, compress next. Compress Image. Slider. Face should still be a face.
If they want jpg and you have png selfie, convert. PNG to JPG. White background. Good for forms.
Name the file photo.jpg. Some sites fail on long names or Hindi names.
Square first if the box is square
Many new portals want a square. Selfie is 4:3. Image to Square adds white. Head stays. Then passport resize to 200 x 200 or whatever they wrote.
If you skip pad, a square resize might squash the cheeks. Ugly. Pad or crop to square by hand, then set px.
Background. White pad looks like a studio if the original background was already light. If the original is a green hostel wall, white bars plus green middle looks like a flag. Crop tighter so less wall, or take a new selfie on a white wall. I took him to the corridor. White-ish wall. New selfie. Better than any tool.
Glasses. Glare. Take two. Pick one. Tool will not remove glare.
Caps. Most forms hate caps. Remove the denim jacket hood also. I know it is fashion. Form does not care.
Date. Some forms say photo not older than 3 months. A selfie from last Diwali is older. Take a new one. Resize will not change the date the human sees. They see the haircut.
Password. Not for photos.
If the download looks soft, the original crop was already small. You cannot invent sharp from a 300 px crop if they want 600. Take a new selfie with the camera, not a screenshot of a screenshot.
We do not claim official PSK size as law
I say this again because people screenshot one article and treat it like a gazette. FileOnDesk is not Passport Seva. Not a police department. Not a board exam office. You type the px from that form. If the form is silent, you ask the counter or you read their pdf. You do not take my Kota story as a size chart.
Studio in Jaipur for an actual passport is still the calm choice. Lights, print, digital copy. For a coaching portal at 11 pm, selfie crop plus typed px is what gets the form submitted.
When his form accepted the photo, he sent me a thank you sticker. I told him keep the original selfie. Next form will want a different box. Always start from the original, not from the 200 px version.
If they reject “not matching background”, that is not a px problem. New photo. If they reject “too small”, you enlarged a tiny crop. New photo. If they reject “too big”, checker and compress, or you typed 2000 by mistake.
Ajmer nani still believes a shop with a cloth backdrop is the only way. For her pension form, I took her to the shop. For the boy in Kota with a test tomorrow, the browser was the way.
Type the numbers. Crop with care. Square pad if they want square. Do not quote us as official PSK law. We will not stand in the queue for you.
That is the photo. Submit the rest of the form before the site times out. Kota wifi will die at the worst minute. I have seen it.
