Sir from accounts sent a WhatsApp at 11.40. Office wants the shop bill as pdf before lunch. I am standing near the bus stand in Ajmer with only the phone.
Chrome is already open. Gallery has three jpgs. I thought, if the laptop is at home, maybe this tab can still do the job.
Short answer. Yes for small photos. No for a fat scanner file. I tried both. Phone Chrome did the small ones. The 18 mb scan made the tab sit there like it went to sleep.
Phone Chrome can do the small job
I opened JPG to PDF on Chrome Android. Drop zone is big. Thumb can hit it. I picked two photos of the bill. One was 1.2 mb, other 900 kb. Tool made a pdf in the tab. Download went to my Files folder.
That is the happy path. Aadhaar photo, a marksheet snap, a rent page from the phone camera. Chrome on a mid range Android, last two years, usually handles it.
What I did not do is send the original to any server. Your file is not uploaded to our server. The phone is doing the work in the browser. Close the tab later and that working copy is gone. Gallery still has the jpg.
20 MB is the ceiling on this site. If Chrome says the file is too big, it is not being rude. Tab RAM is small. A colour scan from the shop xerox, 300 dpi, two sides, can sit at 22 mb without trying. Phone will not enjoy that. Laptop Chrome with more memory is the place.
Safari on iPhone I tried once at my cousin house in Udaipur. Picker was fussy. Live photo sat in the list looking like a still. Convert failed till I saved a normal jpg first. I am not writing a Safari manual. Just, if you are on iPhone, export a still, then try Chrome or Safari again with that still.
Firefox on Android also worked for one small png screenshot. I still tell people Chrome because that is what most staff already have.
Do not put ten fat photos in one go on the phone. Two or three, check the download, then next batch. Images to PDF Grid is nicer on a laptop screen. Tiny phone, the grid preview is hard to judge.
If the pdf comes out sideways, that is the photo orientation, not Chrome being clever. Fix the photo in gallery rotate, or use Rotate PDF after, again better on a bigger screen.
Office wifi near the collectorate is patchy. Good news, you do not need a strong upload. File stays in the phone. You still need enough signal to load the tool page once.
When I put the phone down and used a laptop
Tuesday last month, municipality wanted a shop licence scan as one pdf. The xerox boy gave me a colour pdf, 16 mb. Chrome on my Redmi opened the tool. I dropped it. Spinner ran. Screen dimmed. I thought it died.
I waited. Then I killed Chrome. Tried again. Same freeze. Took the pendrive to the office laptop. Chrome there finished in under a minute.
So the rule I keep on a sticky note: phone for camera jpgs under a few mb. laptop for scanner pdfs, merges, anything near 20 MB.
File Size Checker on the phone is still useful. Drop the file, see KB, decide if this tab can take it. If it shows 19 mb, I do not even start JPG to PDF on the phone. I walk to the desktop.
Gmail on mobile also gets angry around 25 mb, different limit, different app. Our 20 MB is for the browser tab not exploding. Two limits. Do not mix them in your head.
WhatsApp document send is another story. A small pdf from phone Chrome often goes through. A 15 mb scan may fail in chat even if FileOnDesk made it. Compress the photos first with Compress Image, then make the pdf.
Battery saver mode on some Androids throttles Chrome. I had one convert stall till I switched that off. Not a FileOnDesk bug. Phone was napping the tab.
Incognito Chrome also worked. Same drop, same download. If your office phone has a weird work profile, try the personal Chrome once.
Do not email yourself the 20 mb file from phone to phone hoping that helps. That just copies the heavy file. Size is still size.
If download button stays grey, wait a second. Phone is slower. Or you have not dropped a file yet. Or the file is over 20 MB and the page already showed a plain error. I wrote about that grey button in another note on this site.
Landscape mode helps a bit for the drop zone. I still prefer sitting, both thumbs, not walking.
Small city office, mixed phones, same 20 MB
We have four phones in the room. Two Samsung, one Vivo, one old Oppo that overheats. Chrome versions are not the same. The Oppo does one photo. Two photos and it wheezes.
I do not promise every Android. I promise the tool is a web page, not a Play Store app you install. If Chrome can run a normal site, it can try. If Chrome is ancient, update it from Play Store when the office wifi allows.
iPad Safari I used at a coaching centre in Kota. Student dropped four assignment photos. Worked. Pdf landed in Downloads. Then she could not find Downloads. That is iPad Files app, not our tool hiding it.
Android Files app, look under Chrome or Downloads. Name is usually something like jpg-to-pdf or a timestamp. Rename before you upload to the portal.
Portal on phone browser plus our tool in another tab is fine. Do not screenshot the pdf. Download the actual pdf. Clerks reject a photo of a pdf. I have seen that at the tehsil counter.
If you only have Safari and it acts strange, save still jpg, try again. HEIC from iPhone, some tools on this site want jpg or png. Gallery share as jpg, then JPG to PDF.
Password pdf on phone I do not even try here. This site cannot open a locked bank statement. Unlock on a PC first. Phone Chrome will not guess the password.
Split and merge of long files, I keep for the laptop. Merge PDF on a phone is possible for two small files. Three marksheets plus a caste certificate scan, I wait till I am at the desk.
Data pack is not the issue for the convert itself. Issue is loading the page, and later uploading the result to the government site, which is a different upload, their server, their size rule.
FileOnDesk is not that government site. We only sit in the middle with a browser tool.
I still carry the laptop on form days when the scan is heavy. Phone Chrome is the backup for the two-photo bill. That split has saved me twice when the bus was late and sir wanted the pdf before 1 pm.
